Have you ever noticed how a salad in a restaurant can seem enjoyably more interesting and flavorful than the one you make at home? That’s because creating a great salad is about so much more than just throwing lettuce and whatever else you have in the fridge into a bowl and covering it with Bleu Cheese Dressing.
Check out our seven steps to making a salad less boring-
Start with your greens and grains. Try two types of greens or combine greens with grains--this will create great texture and flavor. Here are greens and grains to try- arugula, spinach, romaine, kale, cabbage, radicchio, dandelion greens, mixed greens, brown rice, farro, wild rice, and barley.
Add fresh herbs or microgreens. Both add a nutritious punch to your salad.
Load up with veggies--the possibilities are endless!
Add fruit to your salad. I never added fruit until this last summer. I was shocked how much flavor and freshness it adds to your salad. Try oranges, blueberries, apples, grapes, and pomegranate seeds--use seasonal fruit!
Protein is next. Add fish, meats, tofu or beans.
Add a crunchy top and some healthy fats such as nuts, seeds, feta, and goat cheese. It will provide texture, nutrient boost and flavor.
Now dress that salad! A traditional dressing is 3 parts olive oil and 1 part vinegar--add a little honey, Dijon mustard, salt and pepper. Combine in a mason jar, doing a little shaking, and you have yourself a healthy easy dressing. Using our different oils and vinegar, will give you so many possibilities. I recommend starting with one oil and two vinegars.
